Media bosses are calling on the Albanese government to reform Australia’s defamation laws, claiming expensive legal battles are crippling the industry and investment in public interest journalism.

But cynics, including Ross Stevenson, are concerned it will hurt the “little guy” when it comes to court cases.

Matt Collins QC, defamation lawyer, said lawmakers had to weigh up the right to keep a reputation in tact, but also freedom of expression.

“The question is, ultimately, have we go the balance right,” he said on 3AW Breakfast.

“Both are fundamental to a healthy democracy.”
