Why hospitals are turning away patients without ‘named’ referrals
There is concern about hospitals turning away patients, unless they have a “named referral” to a relevant Head of Unit that can then be billed to Medicare.
Dr Margaret Faux, CEO of AIMAC, explained the complex issue on 3AW on Wednesday.
“I don’t see people deliberately trying to cost-shift, or do anything wrong,” she said.
“They’re working in a broken system and the system is enabling them and encouraging them to seek out named referrals.”
