City of Yarra sparks emotional protest after forcing school to open grounds to public
Parents and concerned locals are protesting outside Alphington Grammar after the City of Yarra ordered the school open its gates permanently so people can reach a nearby creek.
The council has sparked anger after it voted unanimously to reopen the Old Heidelberg Road entrance, which was closed in 1953.
It’s claimed it will make it easier for people to reach a nearby creek.
VicRoads has warned it would be unsafe to allow cyclists and pedestrians onto the school grounds.
The principal of the school is fearing worse, saying the move would make it a “predator’s dream” to prey on school children.
“It’s hard not to get emotional,” Dr Vivianne Nikou told Neil Mitchell.
“No principal wants to be in a position where you have to tell a parent that something has happened to their child.”
