Goldfingers strip club on King Street has been destroyed by a suspicious fire.

The blaze erupted shortly after midnight, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The venue, at the corner of Lonsdale and King streets, has been shut for more than two years to make way for a development.

It took 50 firefighters almost two hours to bring the blaze under control.

“It’s probably one of the biggest fires we’ve had in Melbourne for some time,” Commander Matthew Blandford from Fire Rescue Victoria told 3AW Breakfast.

The CBD intersection will remain closed to traffic for “much of the day”.

Fire investigators will inspect the scene today.
