The Yarra River could soon be home to five floating wetlands.

It’s part of lord mayor Sally Capp’s Greenline project.

There is $40 million set aside for the project in the council’s 2022/23 draft budget, which will be delivered today.

Under the plan, five wetlands would be created between Princes Bridge and Yarra’s Edge in Docklands.

The wetlands are designed to return the river to a more natural state, and support more diverse flora and fauna on the river.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp says trial plantings are underway.

“This is a part of the Yarra where salt water meets fresh water,” she told Ross and Russel.

“It is about bringing fish back to the Yarra, it is about birds and insects, it is about birds and wetlands that look fabulous.

“Ultimately this is about creating an attraction for our locals and our visitors.”
