Quick thinking from a group of teens after a tree fell on their tent during a night of wild winds saved a potential tragedy, emergency crews say.

Six teens were hospitalised with back and leg injuries, as well as cuts and grazes, following the incident at a Devil’s River campsite, near Eildon on Wednesday night.

But SES controller Peter Weeks told Neil Mitchell it could have been a whole lot worse.

‘The tree came right down on their tent, just narrowly landing on them,’ he explained on 3AW Mornings.

‘One of the crew actually had enough brains to get them the hell out of there to get into an open area.

‘Later on – when we went to retrieve some of their gear – another tree had fallen and absolutely flattened where they were.

‘Had they stayed there, it would have been a totally different story.’
