The unexpected sport that could be included in the Brisbane Olympics
The surging popularity of competitive video gaming could mean other sports miss out on being part of the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.
Brisbane Olympic organisers can recommend one or two new sports for inclusion in the Games, and esports is emerging as one sport that’s likely to be considered.
The International Olympic Committee is attempting to modernise and appeal to young people, with recent sports added to the Olympics including BMX racing, skateboarding and climbing.
While some don’t consider esports to be a legitimate sport, founder of Sports Geek and owner of League of Legends esports team ‘Gravitas’, Sean Callanan, says it’s definitely possible to get out of breath while playing competitive video games.
“We’ve actually done some tests— the heart rate does spike when there’s a big game on, so yeah, you can get puffed playing esports,” he told 3AW Breakfast.
