Police involved with the dramatic arrest of a man at Melton could “absolutely” face legal scrutiny for their actions, a lawyer has told Neil Mitchell.

Police have been accused of heavy-handed tactics while arresting the man following a wild chase on Sunday.

Police members are seen punching the suspect several times while pinning him to the ground.

Jeremy King, Principal at Robinson Gill Lawyers, said the vision was hard to watch.

“I don’t think you can ever be excused for overreacting,” he said.

“Police have significant powers and they should be using those powers lawfully.

“The law requires them to use them in a manner that is reasonable and proportionate to the danger being faced.

“It is very difficult to see, at that point, with somebody with their hands above their head, who has given up and is lying on their stomach on the ground … how there is any danger posed to them, at that time.”
