Australia’s fuel security has slipped badly, with new research finding the country is far too reliant on foreign oil and has little more than a month’s worth of oil on shore, which could spell catastrophe in the event of shortages.

Richie Merzian, Climate & Energy Director at The Australia Institute, said it only further increased the need for Australians to get out there and buy electric cars.

“The only long-term solution is to be more efficient with the fuel we have, that means bringing in fuel efficiency standards — we have some of the most inefficient cars and car fleet in the world and, secondly, we need to look at how  we can create our own transport fuels and that’s moving to electrified transport,” he said.
