Tom Elliott has expressed concern at proposed changes in the NSW syllabus where students would no longer be judged on their English skills in essays, with the focus only the points they were trying to make.

The 3AW Drive host said literacy skills were on the decline.

“I’m probably a bit of a pedant for this, but it frustrates me how badly the standards have slipped,” he said.

Sue Ollerhead, Senior Lecturer of Language and Literacy Education at Macquarie University, agreed.

“Obviously we are a little bit concerned about the direction it’s going in,” she said.
