Oxford scientists warn NASA plan could spark an alien attack
Oxford scientists claim a NASA proposal to reveal Earth’s location could spark an alien attack.
The US space agency has backed a plan to broadcast a message intended to greet extraterrestrial intelligence.
It’s an updated version of the Arecibo message which was broadcast in 1974.
Summer intern at NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory, Matthew Chong, says information from the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute in California indicates “we have broadcasted our location inadvertently” so we may as well put out an official message.
“The radio broadcasts, television signals … have not been the friendliest,” he told Ross and Russel.
“World war stuff, all of this depressing news.
“We may as well get ahead and send out an actual message.”
Mr Chong thinks there’s a 70 to 80 per cent chance aliens exist, but we shouldn’t expect to hear from them any time soon.
“If they do exist we wouldn’t expect to hear anything back from them in our lifetime or even in our grandchildren’s lifetime,” he said.
