AFL boss responds to claims the league wouldn’t want James Hird to coach again
AFL boss Gillon McLachlan says the league would have no issue with James Hird coaching again.
It comes after Ross Lyon said on Channel 9 it “wouldn’t be good governance” for Greater Western Sydney to appoint Hird as its next coach.
Hird has joined the Giants in a part-time advisory role, marking his first official role at an AFL club since his controversial stint as Essendon coach.
While there is no suggestion Leon Cameron will be finishing in the role at the Giants any time soon, Hird’s return to footy has sparked a wider debate about whether he could coach again.
McLachlan said the AFL would not block it.
“James is a legend of the game and we’ve been really clear on welcoming him back,” he told 3AW.
“It’s great to see him back involved with a club up in NSW.”
