RUMOUR CONFIRMED

Already lengthy delays in delivery times for new cars are set to stretch out even further.

More than 20,000 vehicles were written off during floods in NSW and Queensland, and now need replacement.

CEO of the Motor Trades Association of Australia, Richard Dudley, says “that’s adding to an already large wait list”.

“It comes back to that issue of the microchips … that’s still impacting the market,” he told Ross and Russel.

“We’ve had issue after issue.

“We had the bushfires of late 2019 and early 2020, then we went smack bang into the pandemic — and that caused production lines to close down right around the world — then we’ve had floods here in Australia and other natural disasters as well.

“Plus we’ve got the hire car companies who downsized — in fact, in some cases even got rid of their fleets in the pandemic — they’re lining up to try and get replacements for those vehicles as well.”
