The head of Victoria’s police union says he hopes “common sense” prevails amid calls for criminal justice reform in Victoria.

Wayne Gatt spoke with 3AW Breakfast about proposed changes that would see some offenders not sent to prison.

The secretary of the police association said the big focus in Victoria should be hiring more police.

“We need more police to make our criminal justice system better,” he said.

“But we need more police to continue to keep our streets safe, too.”
