Melbourne woman shares concerning experience in ‘struggling’ hospital system
A woman who’s been admitted to a Melbourne hospital three times in the last nine weeks says nurses are “struggling” and visitors need to be allowed in as soon as possible to ease the strain.
Brooke, who has spent 18 days in hospital over the past few months, detailed several concerning incidents indicating nurses aren’t coping with the current workload.
During her stays she made her own bed “numerous times” and changed her own dressing.
“I did have an accident in bed and the nurse just put a towel over it,” she told Neil Mitchell.
Brooke says she was also forced to get out of her bed and go searching for a nurse after waiting more than three hours for pain relief.
“Nurses are really under the pump. You see when you’re in there, firsthand, that they really are struggling,” she said.
“I think a big part of that is too that visitors still aren’t allowed so the nursing staff are having to do so much.
“Getting visitors back would be a huge huge help.”
Neil Mitchell has also received unconfirmed tips that surgeries have been cut back at several Melbourne hospitals this week.
