Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is “going quite badly for the Russian military”, according to an expert watching the situation closely.

There are reports Russian troops may only have three days of food, ammunition and fuel left.

Professor of political science at Syracuse University, Brian Taylor, says while those reports are unconfirmed, “they seem consistent with other patterns that we’re seeing and the things that we’re hearing”.

He says the Russian military has suffered an enormous number of casualties.

“Today a NATO military officer came out and said that Russia has suffered 30,000 to 40,000 casualties … killed, wounded, prisoner or missing,” he told Ross and Russel.

“That’s a phenomenal share of the nearly 200,000 troops that were mobilised for this war.”

A veteran Putin advisor quitting his post and leaving Russia also points to a pessimistic view of the outcome of the war within the Kremlin.

One of Russia’s highest-ranking officials, Anatoly Chubais, has quit over the war.

He’s now reportedly in Turkey.

“I wouldn’t see this yet as a trend,” Professor Taylor said.

“But it was an indication that many people who worked on sort of economic issues with Putin see nothing good coming down the pike in the coming months.”
