A former Labor MP who was friends with Kimberley Kitching says allegations of bullying within the party need to be addressed.

It comes after her shock death from a heart attack last week at the age of 52.

There are reports Senator Kitching was feeling “isolated” within her own party due to strained relationships with key party figures Penny Wong, Kristina Keneally and Katy Gallagher.

Michael Danby told Neil Mitchell there was no doubt Ms Kitching was feeling pressure internally.

“No rational person can blame the Labor leadership for her death, but it certainly contributed to her stress,” he said.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese refused to be drawn on whether allegations of bullying were worth investigating, saying it was disrespectful given her funeral was on Monday.

Neil Mitchell said Mr Albanese would have to address the issue at some point, not dismiss it.

“His key people are accused of unacceptable bullying against one of their own,” he said.

“It’s OK to take the high moral ground, but you’ve got to prove that you deserve to occupy it.”
