Why a demographer thinks the Ukraine war will be a ‘generation-shaping event’
A leading demographer says the war in Ukraine is a “generation-shaping event”, and social media means it’s likely to lead to a social revolution.
Co-founder and director at The Demographics Group, Simon Kuestenmacher, says “you can set your clock on … this being a huge social movement for peace.”
“The TikTok generation [is] getting live insights from a war zone so it feels even more personal than previous conflicts,” he told Ross and Russel.
Mr Kuestenmacher says there’s also potential the war will fuel a revolution within Russia.
“Russia has an almost unlimited supply of young people, so the cohort of 18 to 27-year-old males in Russia is only going to grow from 7 million to close to 10 million over the next fifteen years. So if I was Vladimir Putin and I had some grant crazy scheme in mind … capturing more countries for my Russian empire, I could do so because I do have enough manpower that is coming online,” he said.
“There is enough potential for young Russians themselves to form, through the sheer weight of numbers, a revolution in their own country.”
