Accused criminal walks free from jail over police swearing-in bungle
A man has walked free from jail on the back of the police swearing in bungle, which was first revealed on The Rumour File.
The accused had spent six months on remand, charged with damaging an emergency services vehicle, as well as other weapons, drugs and theft offences.
It’s since been revealed he successfully applied to have the case dropped because the officer who charged him was one of the 1200 officers wrongly sworn in.
It’s led to concerns hundreds of other accused criminals will try and follow suit and get charges dropped.
Legislation to try and correct the issue passed parliament this week.
“What it says is that everything which has been done by these officers who were not technically sworn-in is to be treated as they had sworn in,” Matt Collins QC told Ross and Russel.
