Neil Mitchell says ‘alarm bells’ keep ringing about Premier’s deal with firefighters’ union

Neil Mitchell says he suspects the Premier’s secret deal with the United Firefighters’ Union is finally about to unravel publicly.

It comes after freedom of information requests revealed the Andrews Government provided a $58 million “Treasurer’s Advance” to fund its contentious EBA.

There was also an ’emergency’ transfer of $20 million to the Metropolitan Fire Brigade so it could pay wages and remain solvent in June, 2020.

The documents reveal more than $6 million was spent on private vehicles for many fire commanders previously not entitled to a car, while all Senior Firefighters were promoted to Leading Firefighter at a cost of $5000 per person.

The new figures raise fresh doubts about how much the industrial agreement is costing taxpayers and for the first time reveal how much money the MFB sought to implement the deal.

“This is a deal, which we paid for, which guaranteed the union would give political support to the state government – a sweetheart deal,” Neil Mitchell said on Friday.

“We have got a right to know every detail.

“On this issue, the alarms are ringing and they will not stop until we know.”
