Slashed speed limits cut road toll in dangerous hotspots
More than 30 Mornington Peninsula roads were fatality-free during a two-year speed reduction trial, increasing pressure to make the speed reductions permanent.
The trial was introduced after the region recorded 14 road deaths in 2019.
Mornington Peninsula Councillor David Gill says something had to be done.
“We were the highest road toll in Victoria of any municipality up until COVID. We needed to take some action,” he told Ross and Russel.
Speeds on the roads were reduced from either 90 or 100km/h to 80km/h under the trial which concluded in December last year.
While there were nine road fatalities on the Mornington Peninsula, none were on the roads included in the trial.
