Why Gerard Healy remains ‘unconvinced’ about proposed MCG upgrade

Gerard Healy admits he can’t understand calls for a billion-dollar rebuild of the MCG.

The issue has been a huge talking point over the past week, coincidentally on the back of the NFL Super Bowl, which was played at the new $7.7 billion SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire is among those leading the charge, calling for the Great Southern Stand to be destroyed and rebuilt and even a roof being put on top of Melbourne’s iconic ground.

“My view could change, but I’m still unconvinced it’s such a priority,” Gerard Healy said on 3AW.

Healy said he’d never heard a fan or official complain about the state of the Great Southern Stand until this week.

He said it was “nonsense” to suggest the MCG risked losing its place in the sporting landscape if it wasn’t upgraded soon.
