There isn’t a better living journalist in Australia than Andrew Rule, according to Neil Mitchell.

But how did he become the writer he is?

Andrew joined Neil on Tuesday for 3AW’s What Makes You Tick segment.

Each Tuesday, Neil speaks to someone about the formative experiences that made them what they are.

Rule was raised in East Gippsland, growing up at Lake Tyers near an Aboriginal settlement where his mother taught.

He sorted out secondary school in Sale before beginning his reporting career at the Gippsland Times.

He also rode in just under a dozen horse races as a jockey.

But it was writing where, going on to become one Australia’s most respected and decorated journalists.

Alongside John Silvester, he wrote the Underbelly series.
