Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire is calling for a series of changes to the MCG, including a roof, greater capacity and a new surrounding precinct.

Mr McGuire, who recently attended the NFL Super Bowl in Los Angele’s new SoFi Stadium, says the MCG needs updating to future-proof the venue.

“At some stage we have to do something with the Southern Stand,” he told Ross and Russel.

“We’ve been looking at this for a long period of time, this stand was built in 1990/1991.”

He’s calling for better audiovisual opportunities to get people back at the footy after years of lockdowns.

“If we’re going to get people to come to a footy on a Friday night when it’s raining … it’s getting harder and harder to do that,” he said.

Mr McGuire also floated building a hospital at the southern end of the MCG.

“People have criticised me saying ‘Why spend the money when we should be building hospitals?’, well alright, let’s build a hospital there, put a state of the art sports medicine hospital. I don’t know why we have to go up to the Epworth or Olympic Park Sports Medicine to get an MRI on a Monday. Why don’t we do it when the bloke gets off the ground?”
