One of Australia’s most prominent voices calling for gambling reform says it’s only a matter of time before the AFL severs ties with gambling advertising, despite the money on offer.

It comes after an AFL fans survey found 37 per cent of supporters were concerned by the amount of gambling advertising associated with the sport.

It was the second most problematic issue for fans, ranked only behind umpiring and rule changes.

“I think, one day, we’ll actually see change, even though the horse appears to have bolted,” Reverend Tim Costello told Tom Elliott.

He said fans would eventually demand it.

“You name an issue, and the AFL has been saying ‘we are a leader’ – it won’t get away with this, in the end,” he said.
