Tom Elliott has backed a move that will see the literacy and numeracy skills of every Victorian year 12 student printed on their graduating certificate.

But it’s got some education experts concerned.

They say it will put too much pressure on students.

“Well, I’ve got news for them,” Tom Elliott said.

“Life is a bit of a test.

“Life is full of being set goals and to at least achieve them, and hopefully beat them.

“The idea of students being terrified about having their marks displayed, I think, is ridiculous.”

But Professor Joanna Barbousas, Dean of La Trobe School of Education, said now was “not the time” to bring in the change.

“We do need to make sure we are supporting students at every point,” she said.

Professor Barbousas said many students would take it as a “gotcha” moment after 13 years of education.
