Neil Mitchell says the public deserves answers after an AFL player was able to have an operation on his ankle, despite Victoria’s tight restrictions on elective surgery due to COVID-19.

Geelong revealed on Thursday small forward Gryan Miers had surgery after suffering a syndesmosis injury to his left ankle at training.

The club told 3AW Drive it was a category one surgery.

“I know quite a few doctors who are asking questions about that,” Neil Mitchell said in response to the news on Friday.

“I’ve got no doubt he was in pain, but a lot of people are in pain.

“There will be many people sitting around who can’t get surgery and are in pain and need it done urgently.

“I’m not saying the rules were bent, but it is a bad look and requires a very serious answer as to how and why he was category one.”

The government has since announced more elective surgery will be able to resume from Monday.
