The skill Ash Barty’s mindset coach says gives her a competitive advantage
Ash Barty’s mindset coach says the world number one’s ability to separate what she can control from what she can’t keeps her from distraction and fuels her success.
Ben Crowe says while Barty “obviously needs to know the score … it doesn’t affect her mindset” during a game.
“She realises that the expectations of us as Australians, or media, or social media, aren’t real and she can’t control them,” he told Neil Mitchell.
“So she lets go of all those distractions and focuses back on the things she can control.”
Mr Crowe says the tennis star’s in-game stoicism is “a competitive advantage”, but, as her end of match scream after beating Danielle Collins in straight sets showed, she’s also human.
“When you achieve something like that after so long, there was just this beautiful kind of energy release.”
