What humidity does to the human body
A leading sports physician says the body’s inability to cool itself effectively in hot, humid, conditions is the reason many people find the weather so uncomfortable.
It comes as Victoria again swelters in stifling conditions.
Dr Peter Brukner, a former Australian cricket team doctor, told Neil Mitchell the body used sweat to regulate its temperature.
But sweat didn’t evaporate as well in humid weather.
“Therefore, you don’t get that cooling effect,” he explained.
“Most of us can cope with dry heat, it’s humidity that’s the problem.”
He went on to share some tips as to how best combat the conditions.
