Grave fears held for Melbourne’s iconic hospitality scene
The owner of several popular Melbourne restaurants says he’s never seen the city’s world-renowned hospitality scene in this much trouble.
And constant “negativity” from political leaders isn’t helping, says Chris Lucas.
Mr Lucas, who owns businesses including Chin Chin, said the current situation was “worse” than lockdown, given the lack of financial support.
He said “changing goalposts” in regards to density limits, mask rules, working from home and now expected changes to vaccine mandates were crippling.
“Our political leaders continue to send out negative messaging, eroding the confidence of not just the consumer, but our ability to rebuild,” Mr Lucas said.
“Unless this negative sentiment changes, to one of a more stimulatory and positive sense of messaging, we are in trouble as a city.
“I really fear about what’s going to happen.”
