AFLW player withdraws from pride round for religious reasons
An AFLW player has withdrawn from Greater Western Sydney’s side this week after deciding not to wear the club’s pride jumper for religious reasons.
Haneen Zreika, who is Muslim, told the Giants she would not wear the jumper against the Western Bulldogs, which recognises the LGBTQI+ community.
She has reportedly spoken with her teammates about her decision.
Tom Elliott said Zreika had every reason to feel aggrieved.
“They want to include people on a pride basis, but if you have a religion which goes against that, you can’t be included,” he said.
“The AFLW can’t market itself as being inclusive, but at the same time prevent players with strong religious views from playing and that’s what is going on here.
“This is what happens when you try and appease everybody and be all things to all people and tolerate everybody under this broad, wonderful, banner you’ve created because invariably you have problems, because not everybody agrees.”
