Why there’s been ‘massive influx’ in the number of ‘pocket pets’ surrendered to shelters

The number of pocket pets – such as rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets – being surrendered at Victorian shelters has almost tripled in the past six months.

Ali Small from the Lost Dog’s Home says it’s due to poorly researched lockdown pet purchases.

“We’re seeing a massive influx of them from people surrendering them to both their local council and to us as well,” she told Ross and Russel.

“We think a lot of people probably got a rabbit or a guinea pig while their kids have been at home, getting home schooled, because they think they’re probably a good pet, fairly low maintenance, and unfortunately it’s not actually the case and I think they’re starting to realise that now that their lives are getting a bit busier.”
