Novak Djokovic’s exemption ‘not going over well’ in tennis community, commentator says
A renowned tennis commentator says Novak Djokovic’s medical exemption to play in the Australian Open is “not going over well” within the tennis community.
Analyst at the Tennis Channel in the United States, Jon Wertheim, says he thinks the exemption “doesn’t smell quite right”.
Mr Wertheim says he’s been told other tennis players are not pleased about the exemption.
“I don’t think this is going over well in the locker room,” he told Shane McInnes, filling in for Dee Dee.
“In fact, I’ve heard from players and from a coach of a prominent player who has said this is not going over well.”
British tennis player Jamie Murray has questioned the decision to grant Djokovic an exemption.
“I think if it was me that wasn’t vaccinated I wouldn’t be getting an exemption,” he said while speaking after Great Britain lost to Canada in the ATP Cup.
Australian tennis player Alex De Minaur said the exemption is “very interesting, that’s all I’m going to say”.
