People are being told not to come into the city tonight unless they have a ticket to an event or a booking at a restaurant or bar.

There will be no rooftop fireworks this year, with ground level displays instead planned at four celebration zones.

Lord mayor Sally Capp says the events are for the fully vaccinated only.

“Our biggest concern really is to maintain those COVID-safe environments, so for people who don’t have a ticket a celebration zone, that haven’t booked into a venue, could I recommend that they please do that, it is our best way of delivering a COVID-safe New Year’s Eve,” she told Shane McInnes, filling in for Neil Mitchell.

For the 42,000 people with tickets to the four celebration zones, Councillor Capp says the city will be putting on a spectacular show.

“We’ve got more than 115 entertainers,” Councillor Capp said.

“We’ve hired 325 glitter balls.

“We wanted to make sure we’re delivering a program of fantastic entertainment and activities for people who do really want to bring in the new year in City of Melbourne style.”
