Melbourne researchers have unlocked a mystery of Parkinson’s disease, which they hope could improve treatment.

Some 80,000 Australians are living with the degenerative disease, for which there is currently no cure.

Scientists have spent almost a decade examining how a key protein starves brain cells of energy.

And there’s been a breakthrough.

The team from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research hopes it could lead to fast-tracked treatment options.

“This is the culmination of many years of work,” Associate Professor Grant Dewson told 3AW Breakfast.
