Epidemiologist Nancy Baxter says she fears church on Christmas Day could spark several COVID-19 “super spreader” events, given the lack of restrictions in place and vulnerable demographics in attendance.

Professor Baxter was asked on 3AW whether she was concerned about the prospect of crowds of up to 90,000 people at the MCG for the Boxing Day Test, which she is, but she said it was another setting in the coming days that she was more worried about.

“I’m more concerned about church on Christmas Day,” Professor Baxter said.

“We don’t have masks, we have the unvaccinated attending – I understand why that’s allowed – but you have unvaccinated people attending church, no density restrictions.

“We could have multiple super-spreader events on Christmas Day at church.”

The solution?

“Masks,” she said.

“Wearing a mask at church doesn’t affect your ability to celebrate the day, or celebrate your faith.”
