Tom Elliott says he senses a shift from the Labor Party when it comes to immigration, with Anthony Albanese refusing to back the federal government’s plan for a “Big Australia.”

“This, to me, is a big shift,” the 3AW Drive host said on Monday, noting Labor’s historic pro-immigration stance.

He spoke about the matter with Dr Stephen Mills, from the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Sydney.

He said it was more to do with the number of immigrants, not necessarily a shift in stance.

“I think, probably on balance, if it was a choice between 50,000 and 200,000 – as you’ve put it – I think the 50,000 probably looks pretty attractive to a population that’s had lockdown and is only slowly getting back on its feet,” he said.
