Victoria’s top cop says there “isn’t any urgency” to lay charges in the mystery of missing campers Carol Clay and Russell Hill.

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton says he’s confident police will solve the case, but it’s “one of the most complex cases” he’s ever been briefed on.

Greg Lynn, a 55-year-old pilot, was arrested in relation to the case on Monday night, and is still in police custody without charge.

Mr Patton says the length of time Mr Lynn can be held without charge “depends on a range of things” including the complexity of the matter, if medical treatment is required, and what legal advice is needed.

“We’re not rushing into anything here. We’re taking it methodically,” he told Neil Mitchell.

Police are still calling for help from the public to locate a silver trailer which was spotted in the Wonnangatta Valley at the Mr Hill and Ms Clay were last seen.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward to Crime Stoppers.

“We are still reliant on members of the public for information,” the chief commissioner said.
