?Usman Khawaja doesn’t expect to play in Australia’s second one-day international clash against India at the Gabba on Friday night.

But the fact he’s been called into the squad to cover for opener David Warner, who’s returned home to be with his wife Candice ahead of the imminent birth of their second child, indicates to him that the selectors are looking at him for a possible return to the 50-over format.

Khawaja’s form for Queensland in the domestic one-day competition late last year, coupled with his form with Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League, has earned the 29-year-old a recall to Australia’s squad for the series against India.

The in-form left hander expects Shaun Marsh to replace Warner at the top of the order and partner Aaron Finch.

But if he’s given the nod to play in one of the next few games, he’ll be ready to make the most of the opportunity.

‘I was disappointed not to get in the first squad but I’ve been dropped and not selected enough to know that worrying about it is not going to help,’ Khawaja said.

‘Hopefully when I do (get a chance), I can take it and be more than a Test player for Australia. At the moment I’m just really happy with the way I’m hitting the white ball.’
