An environmental psychologist explains how kids cope with climate change
An environmental psychologist says it’s important to listen what children’s concerns are when they’re dealing with existential threats such as climate change.
Media coverage of climate change has dramatically increased in the last few years, as natural disasters become more frequent and temperatures increase across the globe.
It comes as world leaders descend on Glasgow for COP26, a climate summit widely seen as watershed moment for the world’s climate.
Environmental psychologist Dr Susie Burke says while it’s important parents listen to the concerns of their children, they should also correct any misconceptions.
“It’s not just what they’re thinking, but also how they’re feeling about it and helping to draw out their worries or concerns … those are all really important things that parents can do,” she told Tom Elliott on 3AW Drive.
“Notice and name is what we call it.
“Notice the feelings, and put words to them.”
