Australia’s former deputy chief medical officer says any future restrictions imposed on citizens due to COVID-19 need to be put under even more scrutiny.

Dr Nick Coatsworth told Neil Mitchell that vaccination and evidence of what had and hadn’t worked since the pandemic began warranted it.

“Public health measures now need to be subject to more rigorous analysis, and a more rigorous evidence base, because things might be ‘plausible’ but now we’ve got to actually get some proof that they work, or otherwise ditch them,” he said.

“There had never been trials of these things.

“They’re done under assumptions and interpretation of really circumstantial scientific evidence.”

Dr Coatsworth said there was no doubt Victoria had been more conservative than NSW with restrictions but the time had come for Victoria to look at what was happening north of the border to open back up as quickly as possible.
