Police zero in on theory about disappearance of campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay
Police are zeroing in on a theory about what happened to a pair of campers who went missing in the Victorian High Country last March.
Russell Hill and Carol Clay were last heard from on 20 March 2020.
They were camping in Wonnangatta at the time.
Campers found Russell’s vehicle with signs of minor fire damage at their campsite, which was completely destroyed by fire, near Dry River Creek Track in the Wonnangatta Valley on 21 March last year.
Police have carried out an extensive search for the duo, but they’ve never been found.
Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper says investigators have a strong theory about what happened to the pair.
“The strongest theory we have is sadly that there was a third party intervention, there were other people involved,” he told Ross and Russel.
“That was, in the likelihood, a violent act and there’s been a concealment of Russel and Carol after that act.”
With lockdowns about to end in Victoria, and more people expected to be in the High Country, police are calling for public help to solve the mysterious case.
“We want them to be our eyes and ears,” Detective Stamper said.
