How toys could be influencing a child’s future career
There are calls for toy sections at stores to be de-gendered in a bid to push girls into STEM careers.
It’s claimed “boys and girls” sections influenced children unfairly, and impacted their career choices and possible financial success.
Associate Professor Laura Scholes, from the ACU Institute for Learning Sciences and Teacher Education, told Tom Elliott gendered toys put pressure on kids.
“What we are seeing in our research its that by seven years of age, both boys and girls have very stereotypical ideas about traditional masculine and feminine jobs and the careers they want to have,” she said.
“It starts very early.”
