Why there are concerns about the future of Australia’s fleet of truck drivers
With an ageing fleet of Australian truck drivers headed for retirement, there are concerns there won’t be enough drivers to provide the service that makes the country trick.
Not enough young people are taking up the career.
Peter Anderson, CEO of the Victorian Transport Association, is calling for reform.
“The issue we have is the licence system doesn’t allow us to bring 18 year olds into our industry,” he said on 3AW Drive.
“People need to understand it’s about training, it isn’t about licensing
“There is no structured process in the system that really qualifies an individual to be a truck driver before they get a licence.”
He pointed out pilot training began at 16, while 18-year-olds could shoot a gun in the army.
