Barack Obama praises Australia during Malcolm Turnbull’s White House visit
Barack Obama has praised Australia for its ‘steadfast alliance’ with the US in the fight against ISIL during Malcolm Turnbull’s first visit to the White House as Prime Minister.
Even as Australia announced it will cap its contributions, Mr Obama was effusive in his praise.
‘In our fight against ISIL, Australia is the second-largest contributor of troops on the ground after the United States,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Turnbull called for a more aggressive internet campaign against ISIL to make a ‘mockery’ of their social media efforts.
And he spoke out in support of Mr Obama’s new Iran nuclear deal.
He also deftly sidestepped a tricky question about the approaching US election.
