A man is in custody over a house fire in Melbourne’s north that’s left a passer-by in hospital.

The passer-by, a 33 year old Taylors Lakes man, suffered smoke inhalation when he attempted to enter the Coolaroo home before fire crews arrived around 8.40pm last night.

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Almost 30 firefighters attended the blazeThe Barry Road home has been extensively damaged.

A 40-year-old Coolaroo man was arrested at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries.
