Cop that: Officers hate pursuit rules
EXCLUSIVE
Police officers are overwhelmingly opposed to Victoria’s ‘no pursuit’ laws.
A whopping 93 per cent of about 3000 officers surveyed by the police union say they want the rules scrapped, the Neil Mitchell program has revealed.
Instead, they recommend:
- greater level of discretion
- more authority to be vested in a pursuit co-ordinator
- better training
- expanded aerial support
- investment in tools like vehicle tagging and targeted disabling devices
Police Association boss Ron Iddles told Neil Mitchell the survey results have been handed to Victoria Police.
A review is currently under review, and Mr Iddles is quietly confident of a positive result.
‘The [pursuit] policy needs to be re-written,’ he said.
‘I don’t want to pre-empt it, but I think there will be some adjustment to the policy.’
