Tom Elliott ‘feels sick’ after reading report on Dole loophole

Tom Elliott says it’s time for Australia to take a stand when it comes to the Dole.

It follows a report in The Herald Sun, which highlighted examples of loopholes in the system which made the 3AW Drive host feel ‘sick.’

  • A 58-year-old man preferred playing golf instead, so didn’t have to work.
  • A 23-year-old man was already working three hours a day and didn’t want to do any more.
  • A 19-year-old wanted to be an actor, so couldn’t work in case it interfered with auditions.

The Newstart Allowance costs taxpayers $7.5 billion a year.

But Tom Elliott said clearly some of that was being wasted, if excuses like those mentioned above were being accepted.

‘It is not society’s job to prop up other people,’ the 3AW Drive host said on Tuesday.

‘It is society’s job to help people when they have no other alternative.

‘But if you’re an out-of-work actor and can’t get a job – you go an wait tables – it’s that simple.

‘We should not be accepting these excuses.

‘It makes me sick.

‘I’m extraordinarily angry and you should be, too.’
