Melbourne Grand Prix reveals White Ribbon as official charity for 2016
The head of Melbourne’s Formula 1 Grand Prix admits the traditional concept of a ‘grid-girl’ is outdated after unveiling a partnership with White Ribbon Australia.
Andrew Westacott revealed on 3AW Mornings the event’s official charity for 2016 would be White Ribbon, the organisation which tackles domestic violence and violence against women.
Mr Westacott said he expected debate about the issue on the back of the announcement, but that was the entire point.
‘That’s what this is all about ? driving societal change and having debates and discussions and putting on the table what is and isn’t acceptable,’ he told Neil Mitchell.
‘Too many women die as a result of domestic violence and we’ve got a great platform to take a stand.
’80 per cent of our target audience is men.’
