RUMOUR CONFIRMED: Live grenade behind Sovereign Hill evacuation
CONFIRMED: Fears over a potentially live World War Two grenade prompted Wednesday’s evacuation at Sovereign Hill.
Staff from the Ballarat popular tourist spot said it followed its protocol ‘safety first’ option after a 1930s Italian Breda Rifle Grenade was located in the Gold Museum Collections Centre.
A caller to 3AW Drive told Tom Elliott the tourist attraction had been cleared out and roads in the area blocked off from around 3.30pm on Wednesday afternoon.
The Australian Army bomb squad attended the scene.
And ‘Live Rounds’ told Ross and John he had a fair idea why.
‘Somebody donated some World War Two armoury to them,’ he explained.
‘The only problem was ? it was a live grenade.’
